Through the Wardrobe… to “The Land of Spare Oom….”

One of my all time favorite stories when I was a child was the Chronicles of Narnia. I adored C.S. Lewis’ beautiful world and I read the books many times. I even dressed up like Susan for Halloween as a kid and I attended the movies.

And the person I have most to thank for this world is my mom. She is even more of an avowed C.S. Lewis devotee than I am and when I started thinking about this year’s Christmas present I decided to continue my previous theme of “beloved tales in yarn”, begun two years ago with “There and Back Again” by Frivolite Handcraftsand followed the next year by “Marilla’s Apron” by Joanna Johnson, a nod to Anne of Green Gables

All of my family live in the hot and humid land known as South Carolina, affectionately known as “the armpit of the South” by some more whimsical folks- so I decided to go for lighter fare than a 6 foot long scarf this time around. I designed a double-knitted cowl showing Lucy’s first journey through the Wardrobe and into Narnia, with present-laden Mr. Tumnus on the other side. I love the “continuous-ness” that cowl designs allow.

I also made my first attempt at duplicate stitch by adding a warm gold glow to the lamppost’s panes on both sides of the cowl.

This pattern is available for free in my Ravelry store, so head on over and start your own trip to Narnia in yarn 🙂  Remember… “Further up and further in!”
