The Quiet Book of Fierce Majesty: the Video Tour

Without further ado, I offer up a brief tour of my son’s Quiet Book… of FIERCE MAJESTY!

Just a couple of quick notes on putting it all together. I tried to take lessons I had learned from the quiet book I made for my niece and upgrade them here. For instance, I didn’t assume anything could “hold up” without extra stitching- so when I put two pages together, I whip stitched all the way around the edges to make sure they couldn’t come apart, instead of just trying to use some fabric glue. And pretty much everything was tacked down extra securely. I didn’t want him to be able to rip pieces of of the book that weren’t mean to be removable!

For the final finishing, after the pages were sewn together in pairs, I used one end of some very sharp scissors to make two small holes through both layers approximately where the grommets would need to go. I had to then snip the holes big enough so that the grommets had plenty of space. I have to admit that one of the most satisfying things is tapping the grommets/ eyelets into place on the little “anvil” 🙂

Once all of the grommets were in it was just a matter of feeding the ribbon through the pages and then cover and making sure the pages went in in the correct order. And it was done!

This was a really fun project, thought perhaps a little crazy in depth and original planning (as I had about 4-6 extra pages planned but soon realized I had not the energy, or room in the book, to fit them all.

This was definitely not cheap though none of the individual items was expensive and the cost was spread out over several “phases” of construction as I would come to a new page and have a new idea of how I wanted it to look. There was also the original problem of wandering the aisles of Joann’s and Micheal’s and window shopping items I probably could have found other ways to replicate. But it is done and I am very pleased and most importantly…. my son is actually playing with it!

Now if I can just calm the instinct of making him keep all the pieces together, and not losing any, and not getting them dirty, and no don’t take it outside, and… and.. and… okay dude, you’re right, it’s yours. Do with it as you will!
