QBoFM: Rounding up some Fantastic Beasts!

I have to admit.. these may have been my favorite quiet book pages. These were completely my own idea and design and I absolutely adore how they came out!

I got the idea to make it a two page spread, because I knew I couldn’t fit everything into just one. So I made the left hand page the city skyline, cutting out windows and layering a piece of yellow felt under that part of the building to show the many busy people, bustling around 1920’s NYC. I sewed down velcro dots randomly around the page, one for each beast.

I ended up finding pictures online of the beasts I wanted to make and printing them out at the approximate size I needed. I cut them out and made sure they would all fit on the city as well as in Newt’s case, which was the right hand page. I then used the cutouts as pattern outlines and to help guide me through the embroidery.

For his case I basically just layered felt, and then added accent pieces along the edges and corners, as well as a lock on the edge. I sewed down the right hand edge so that the case’s lid opens up.

Everything was sewed down and secured on the case. Next came the most challenging part… the Beasts!

The Occamy was probably the most detailed. I layered three colors of felt for the wings and two for the feathers at the top of its head. I then did a stitched outline and filled in the majority of the body with hand sewn sequins. I used the smallest sized sequins I had for the body and the forehead area. I wanted as much of his body as possible covered in scales.

The other beasts were a little more straight forward. The Erumpent was just basic embroidery stitching and layering two pieces of felt.

The Demiguise, the Niffler, and the Bowtruckle had extra pieces of contrasting felt for the faces, the Demiguise’s handbag, and Bowtruckle leaves and then a piece of sparkly foam for the Niffler’s gold coin.

All of the beasts were embroidered on larger pieces of felt before being cut around and sewn together with a matching back piece of felt. A marking pen that erases with air exposure was extremely helpful in sketching some basic guidelines as I stitched.

Now that they are all stuffed and velcro-ed, there’s nothing left to do but release the beasts onto the unsuspecting city… and then round them back up into their magical case!

And finally coming up next will be the grand video tour!
