“Operation: Warm Heads”

A while back my local yarn shop mentioned that they would be a drop off point for a local charity called Operation Warm Heads. It’s a Little Rock, AR based organization that provides warm hats for children in the area who don’t have one. They encourage volunteers to knit or crochet a hat and decorate it, either simply with fun color choices or cute crocheted appliques.

After the “Mantle of Fierce Majesty” and sundry other projects I had quite a bit of superwash, worsted weight yarn left over (Cascaded 220 superwash, Berroco Vintage etc.) so I embarked on a project to start making a hat every 1-2 weeks starting in July so that by the time the weather turns I have a decent stash of hats to donate!

I’m enjoying the freedom and creativity of these hats. The hat bases are quick and easy and I can choose different applique patterns to make each one unique.

They will also be great stash busting projects for all of my odds and ends  that are perfect for the appliques. I’ll need to buy superwash yarn for the hat bases after the first couple of hats most likely, but it will be great for making use of and “tying up loose ends” of left over yarn 😉
